Oregon daybreak (Kathleen Kenna photo)

Most mornings, I’m writing in the dark (literally, but some might say figuratively).

Hours pass before sunlight breaks.

Yesterday, the light caught me when I left my keyboard for a green tea refill.

In the minutes it took to find the camera and shoes, then race outdoors, daybreak already had lost some of its red brilliance.

Still, the sight of this color staining our western sky filled me with hope for better days.
