It’s been so wet and gray in Portland, that even weather forecasters are giving advice about how to combat depression in these darker days.

After five months of almost solid rain when we moved to Portland in January, we added a new word to our vocabulary: “sunbreaks.”  It always inspires gratitude.

This is when the sun bursts suddenly through the gloom.  It often disappears as suddenly as it arrived.  But today, the sun is playing with us, punctuating the grayness with intermittent sunbreaks.  After showers all night, the rain is holding off.

Sunbreaks offer a momentary lesson for living fully:  Celebrate the tiny bursts of joy and they’ll help dispel the gloom.
