I’m grateful, grateful, grateful for deep breathing: When I was young and frightened of the dark, my mom taught me to place my hand on my heart (or where I imagined it to be), and breathe deeply to be centered. When I was a teen, my maternal grandfather taught me to breathe long and deep when outdoors, so that I could fully appreciate nature. I could hold nature in my lungs, and feel my chest expand with its beauty.
Now, I breathe deeply to alleviate pain, to edge anxiety aside, to stay grounded. I’m grateful for the opportunity to breathe deeply and pain-free. And I’m thankful for everyone who has taught me to truly breathe — it takes a lifetime of practice!
